WORLD CHESS HALL OF FAME'S A Queen Within Exhibition Preview

Christie’s showroom at Rockefeller Plaza was the setting for the preview of the upcoming fashion exhibition: A Queen Within; Adorned Archetypes, Fashion, and Chess yesterday. The exhibition opening at the World Chess Hall of Fame in Saint Louis on October 19, 2013, explores the unique relationship between the queen archetype in chess and her influence on fashion.
The exhibit coordinators explained that in the game of chess is it is possible for a player to obtain a maximum of nine queens simultaneously during a game of chess. A Queen Within explores the nine personas of the queen based on psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s most common archetypes : Sage, Mother Figure, Magician, Enchantress, Explorer, Tulrer, Mother Earth, Heroine and Orphan. The story of each persona – its powers, its weaknesses, its significance, its sacrifice – is told through examples of fashion, photography, film and artwork.

“We have designed the exhibition itself to be a 3,200 square foot piece of art that viewers can experience on many different level. They’ll be able to look closely for hidden symbols, stand back to appreciate the overall effect of enveloping visual and reflect on each theme”, said Sofia Hedman, curator.

On display at Christie’s was a selection of the many pieces that will be part of the exhibit in Saint Louis that included deisgns by Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Maison Martin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Viktor & Rolf, and Writtenafterwards. The master of coiffure Charlie Le Mindu will create bespoke head pieces for the exhibition.

Produced by an international team of thought-leaders, curators, fashion insiders, and chess players, the exhibition focuses on the how storytelling as well as the various archetypes of the queen have captured the imagination of innovative fashion designers. Curator, Sofia Hedman has curated and designed numerous exhibitions in London, Tokyo and Stockholm. Her central area of interest and expertise is conceptual fashion and art, and the history of fashion combined with a keen commitment to experimental fashion curation. She has investigated what can be deemed characteristics and codes for avant-garde fashion curation and their implications for contemporary exhibitions.

A mix of New York’s fashion and art crowd gathered on Tuesday at the auction house to preview the exhibition and mingle to sounds by designer DJ Timo Weiland while sipping sparkling wine by Ooh La La wine. Along with striking fashion, guests viewed commissioned chess sculptured by Orlando Campbell, made with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Notable attendees included actress Radha Mitchell, ABC’s Deborah Roberts, Decade’s Cameron Silver, Simon Doonan, Amy Fine Collins, Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, Nadja Swarovski, Valerie Steele, Monique Péan, Nicole Miller, Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of SUNO, Annabelle Neilson, Hayley Bloomingdale, Indre Rockefeller, Derek Blasberg, Julie Macklowe, Gillian Miniter, Adelina Wong Ettelson, Helen Lee Schifter, Annelise Peterson, Emma Snowdon-Jones, Michael Avedon, and stylists Brad Goreski and Phillip Bloch.
